THOMAS ANDERSON
Chief Information Officer at Tomkin Outreach
Can you please provide a little introduction about yourself
I began my career as a Telephone Technician in the United States Air Force, where I installed both residential and business telecommunications systems. This role marked my first step into the world of communications, which has been a central theme in my career. After transitioning from military to civilian life, I continued working as a telephone technician while pursuing higher education—a journey fraught with challenges, including a college closure that left me with debt and no degree. However, my persistence paid off when I moved to Atlanta, worked multiple jobs, and eventually earned a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in my early 30s.
Following graduation, I joined UPS as a Management Trainee, at the UPS corporate office where I immersed myself in learning the intricacies of supply chain management. My career path then took me to the Department of Defense, where I currently serve as an equipment specialist, supporting the U.S. Army warfighters. My role involves training and nurturing young soldiers in Information Technology, leveraging my expertise in communications to enhance operational effectiveness.
Currently based in Watertown, NY, after a significant stint in South Korea, I continue to travel globally, serving the Department of Defense. Despite my extensive responsibilities, my passion for technology never wanes. I stay abreast of industry standards, particularly in digital marketing and networking, which are integral to my role as the Chief Information Officer (CIO) for Tomkin Outreach. Here at Tomkin Outreach, our mission is to reach the lost and teach the found through technology. We empower under-resourced youth, college students, and small businesses through comprehensive training in digital marketing, e-commerce, and emerging technologies, fostering the development of confident, competent, and compassionate leaders.
My journey from an aspiring student overcoming educational setbacks to a leader in technology and communications reflects my dedication to resilience and service. I am committed to using my position to inspire and develop the next generation of tech-savvy professionals and leaders.
What path have you taken to your current position?
My path to my current role as the Chief Information Officer at Tomkin Outreach has been both unconventional and enriching. Interestingly, my career in communications and technology wasn’t initially a choice but a direction provided by the Air Force. They assigned me to this field based on my ability to climb a pole—a simple test that set the stage for my entire professional life.
After my military service, I pursued higher education, which was a milestone filled with considerable challenges and triumphs. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Computer Technology from Georgia Tech, a world-renowned institution. During my time at Georgia Tech, I was not just an older student in a demanding program, but I also managed a business and worked two part-time jobs simultaneously. This period taught me resilience and the importance of perseverance under pressure.
Transitioning from education to the corporate world, I joined UPS Supply Chain Solutions as a Management Trainee, where I was immersed in learning the complexities of supply chain management. The experience at UPS Corporate Office was incredibly challenging, involving long work hours and demanding projects. However, it prepared me for my subsequent role with the Department of Defense, where I currently support the U.S. Army Warfighter as an equipment specialist. This position requires extensive travel, presenting unique challenges but also opportunities to impact operations on a global scale.
Currently, my passion lies in digital marketing—a field that continues to evolve rapidly. At Tomkin Outreach, I am leading initiatives that leverage this passion, such as overseeing a Digital Marketing and E-commerce internship program with students from Nairobi, Kenya. This program not only allows me to apply my skills in a new and exciting context but also fulfills our mission to empower under-resourced youth and small businesses through training in emerging technologies.
This journey—from a military technician to an educator and leader in technology—highlights a trajectory marked by continuous learning, adaptation, and a commitment to leveraging technology to make a tangible impact on the world.
Has it always been your vision to reach the position you’re at? Was your current role part of your vision to become a tech leader?
Becoming a tech leader wasn't a predetermined path for me, but rather a journey shaped by curiosity and evolving passions. My fascination with technology started at a young age, driven by an eagerness to understand how electronics work. This curiosity laid the foundation for my interest in the broader field of technology, although communications specifically wasn't my initial choice.
My entry into communications was largely serendipitous, determined by the Air Force based on practical assessments rather than personal preference. However, through my experiences in the military and subsequent roles, I've come to appreciate the critical importance of effective communication. I realized that at the heart of every significant technological advancement lies robust and efficient communication, which is fundamental to our increasingly interconnected world.
As I progressed in my career and learned more about the transformative power of technology and communication, my focus shifted towards education and leadership. The pivotal moment came when I recognized the gap in leadership that could bridge technology with practical applications to train and empower the next generation. This realization drove me to become more involved in mentoring and developing young talent, which is central to my role at Tomkin Outreach.
At Tomkin Outreach, I was thrust into the role of a tech leader out of necessity—the necessity to harness technology for social good and to educate tomorrow's leaders. My current position is not just a job but a fulfillment of a vision that formed over time, guided by the needs I saw in the community and the industry. It’s about leveraging my expertise to impact others positively, ensuring that we not only keep pace with technological advances but also lead the charge in using these tools for meaningful change.
In essence, while my current role as a tech leader was not part of an original vision, it has become a passionate pursuit, shaped by experiences and a deep-seated desire to make a difference through technology.
Have you had a role model or mentor that has helped you on your journey? (If you feel comfortable, please share their name and how they helped you)
Throughout my journey, I've been profoundly influenced by the teachings of several spiritual leaders, notably Dr. Myles Munroe, whose work I've followed closely, although we never met personally. Dr. Munroe was renowned for his deep insights into leadership, purpose, and the principles of the Kingdom of God. His teachings on leadership, in particular, emphasized the importance of serving others, understanding one's purpose, and leading by example—concepts that have deeply resonated with me and shaped my approach to leadership.
In addition to Dr. Munroe, I've also drawn inspiration from other spiritual leaders like Bishop Dale Bronner, Bishop T.D. Jakes, and Pastor Joseph Prince. Each of these figures has contributed to my understanding of leadership not just as a position of authority, but as a role of service and spiritual stewardship. Their collective teachings have underscored the significance of nurturing the 'spirit man,' which I believe is crucial for leading with integrity, vision, and compassion.
The integration of these spiritual principles into my leadership style has been instrumental in guiding my decisions and interactions, both personally and professionally. By focusing on developing the inner qualities of leadership—such as wisdom, empathy, and moral courage—I strive to lead in a way that transcends traditional business practices, aiming instead to inspire and uplift those I work with.
These mentors, though ALL only virtually, have helped me appreciate the broader impact of leadership. They've taught me that true leadership involves cultivating a strong spiritual foundation, which in turn enhances one's ability to lead effectively in all spheres of life.
How do you see the role of the technology leader evolving over the next 5 years?
As change accelerates, particularly in the realm of technology, the role of technology leaders is poised to evolve significantly over the next five years. At Tomkin Outreach, we are at the forefront of developing young talent through our comprehensive internship programs, preparing the next generation of leaders to navigate and shape this rapidly evolving landscape.
In the coming years, technology leaders will need to extend beyond traditional managerial roles to become visionaries who can anticipate emerging trends and strategically prepare their organizations. This involves creating diverse and agile teams that cover all aspects of technological expertise—innovation, implementation, cybersecurity, and virtualization.
Cybersecurity will demand increased attention as the complexity and frequency of cyber threats escalate. Technology leaders at Tomkin Outreach and beyond must ensure their teams are not only equipped with cutting-edge tools but also possess a robust understanding of risk management and threat mitigation strategies. This security-first approach is vital for protecting sensitive data and maintaining trust with stakeholders.
Additionally, virtualization technologies will increasingly become essential for driving operational efficiency and flexibility, allowing businesses to scale and adapt without the burden of extensive physical infrastructure. Leaders must champion these technologies to support efficient, scalable operations and to facilitate remote or hybrid work models.
Moreover, as technology permeates all sectors of business and society, leaders will also need to address the ethical implications of their technological decisions. It’s crucial to balance innovation with stringent data privacy standards and ensure that technological advancements do not compromise privacy or equity.
Overall, the technology leader of the next five years will embody a mix of technical expertise, strategic foresight, and ethical governance. By nurturing innovative, security-conscious teams proficient in virtualization technologies, and through programs like those at Tomkin Outreach, technology leaders can effectively steer their organizations towards enduring success in an ever-evolving digital world.
What skills do you think leaders of the future will need in order to thrive?
The landscape of leadership is evolving rapidly, driven by technological advancements and changing societal expectations. To thrive in such a dynamic environment, leaders of the future will need a robust set of skills that not only address the technical demands of their roles but also foster strong, resilient organizations.
Here are the key skills I believe are essential:
Great Communication: As the foundation of effective leadership, great communication is indispensable. Future leaders must be able to clearly articulate visions, strategies, and expectations to diverse audiences. They need to be proficient in various forms of communication, including digital platforms, to ensure their messages resonate across global and culturally diverse teams.
Team Development: The ability to build, nurture, and retain high-performing teams is critical. Leaders must be adept at identifying and cultivating talent, providing mentorship, and creating environments where team members are encouraged to grow and take initiative. This involves a deep understanding of individual team members' strengths and how these can be synergized to achieve collective goals.
Versatility: The rapid pace of change in technology and market conditions demands versatility in leadership. Leaders must be agile, able to pivot and adapt strategies quickly. This flexibility will be crucial in navigating the uncertainties and opportunities that lie ahead.
Compassion: Empathy and compassion are vital for leaders who aim to connect with their teams and foster a supportive work environment. Understanding and addressing the needs and concerns of team members not only enhances productivity but also builds loyalty and trust. Compassionate leadership will be increasingly important as workforces become more diverse and the lines between professional and personal lives continue to blur.
Commitment: Finally, commitment to their vision, values, and people will distinguish successful leaders. This involves a steadfast dedication to ethical standards and a long-term commitment to sustainable practices. Leaders who demonstrate a genuine commitment to the welfare of their teams and the broader community will inspire similar dedication from their followers.
At Tomkin Outreach, we prioritize these skills in our leadership development programs, ensuring that our future leaders are not only equipped to handle the challenges of tomorrow but also committed to creating a positive impact in their communities and industries.
Is there anything in particular that you would still like to achieve in your career or what is the next step on your journey?
In my career, while I have achieved many milestones, there are significant goals I am still passionate about pursuing. My vision includes two main objectives: establishing a successful nonprofit organization and nurturing successful limited liability companies (LLCs) that not only thrive economically but also contribute positively to our communities.
For the nonprofit, Tomkin Outreach, my aim is to expand our reach and impact, particularly in empowering under-resourced communities through technology and education. The goal is to build a robust, sustainable organization that not only addresses immediate educational needs but also fosters long-term development and self-sufficiency in technology skills. Achieving this involves enhancing our programs, expanding our partnerships, and securing a stable funding base that allows us to innovate and scale our efforts globally. We currently serve a group of students out of Nairobi, Kenya.
Regarding the LLCs, I currently serve as a C-level executive at two LLCs: Tomkin Consulting, LLC, an IT consulting agency, and BNBB Productions, a media production company. My focus is on creating and growing these enterprises to be at the forefront of their industries—whether that be in digital marketing, technology solutions, or media production. These businesses should not only be successful in terms of profitability but also in their corporate responsibility. This means implementing sustainable practices, promoting diversity and inclusion, and having a tangible positive impact on the communities they serve.
The next step on my journey involves deepening the integration between my nonprofit initiatives and business ventures. By aligning the objectives and resources of both sectors, I aim to create a synergistic impact that leverages the strengths of each to address complex challenges more effectively. This strategy will facilitate more innovative solutions, enhance operational efficiencies, and multiply the positive outcomes of our work.
Ultimately, my career aspirations are not just about business success but about creating a legacy that combines entrepreneurial spirit with a deep commitment to social responsibility. I am dedicated to continuing this journey, constantly learning, adapting, and striving to make a meaningful difference in the world.
What advice would you give to aspiring technology leaders who are just starting their careers?
Aspiring technology leaders at the outset of their careers face a rapidly changing landscape, one that demands not only technical acumen but also a strong set of leadership qualities. One piece of advice I often reflect on comes from Nelson Mandela, who said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." This quote is particularly relevant for those entering the field of technology.
Firstly, never stop learning. The field of technology is one that evolves continuously, and being successful requires an ongoing commitment to education and personal development. Whether it's new programming languages, emerging tech trends, or leadership strategies, learning never stops.
Secondly, embrace failure as a part of learning. In technology, not every project or initiative will succeed in the traditional sense, but each will provide valuable lessons. The ability to learn from failure and to persevere is crucial. View each setback as an opportunity to refine your approach and strengthen your skills.
Thirdly, build diverse teams. Innovation thrives in environments where diverse perspectives and experiences are brought together. As a leader, seek to create and nurture teams that bring a variety of backgrounds and viewpoints to the table. This diversity will enrich your projects and lead to more innovative solutions.
Lastly, lead with integrity and compassion. Technology has a profound impact on people's lives. As leaders, it is your responsibility to ensure that this impact is positive and ethical. Treat your team with respect, act with integrity, and make decisions that prioritize the welfare of both individuals and the broader community.
By following these principles, aspiring technology leaders can not only succeed in their careers but also make significant contributions to the field and society at large. Remember, leadership is not just about understanding technology but about using that knowledge to inspire and effect change.
"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."
What has been the biggest challenge you've faced in your career so far, and how did you overcome it?
The biggest challenge I've faced in my career is the constant uncertainty of not knowing what tomorrow may bring, coupled with the necessity of becoming comfortable with being uncomfortable. My work involves extensive travel, immersing me in a diverse array of environments, cultures, and situations across the globe. This continuous change, while enriching, requires constant adaptation and an ability to thrive in unfamiliar settings.
This aspect of my career echoes the experiences of managing bipolar disorder, where one must frequently navigate fluctuating conditions, striving for balance and stability amidst change. Managing such unpredictability demands strong resilience and coping strategies. It involves embracing the uncertainty as part of the journey, rather than a barrier to be completely conquered.
To tackle this challenge, I have focused on building a robust support system and sharpening my adaptive skills. This includes maintaining a disciplined routine as much as possible, prioritizing mental and physical health, and finding continuity in change by identifying familiar patterns in new settings. I also make a point to learn about new cultures and environments beforehand, which helps alleviate the stress of transition.
Additionally, I've embraced the philosophy that being comfortable with discomfort is a skill that can be developed. By viewing each new environment as an opportunity for growth rather than a disruption, I have learned to adapt more fluidly. Accepting that change is a constant and integral part of my career has enabled me to better manage the uncertainties it brings, providing me with valuable insights and resilience that enhance both my professional and personal life.
What role do you see emerging technologies (e.g., AI, machine learning, blockchain) playing in your industry, and how are you preparing for them?
Emerging technologies such as AI, machine learning, and blockchain are profoundly transforming industries, including education, empowerment, and enterprise development, the core areas where Tomkin Outreach operates. Our mission to reach the lost and teach the found through technology aligns seamlessly with these innovations, leveraging them to enhance our impact.
Educational Impact: Through our partnership with Google Certifications, we offer courses like AI Fundamentals, which enable personalized and engaging learning experiences. This initiative tailors our digital marketing and e-commerce training to the specific needs of under-resourced youth and college students, enhancing learning outcomes and ensuring that education is both accessible and effective.
Employability Enhancement: By integrating training on AI, blockchain, and other emerging technologies into our programs, we prepare our students to not only participate in but also lead the digital economy. This strategic approach ensures that they are employable and equipped with cutting-edge skills, placing them at the forefront of technological innovation.
Leadership Development: Blockchain technology, known for its transparency and security, is particularly influential in teaching ethical practices and building trust. Educating our students about blockchain and its applications encourages them to think critically about using technology to create more equitable systems.
To keep pace with these rapid advancements, we continually update our curriculums and expand our partnerships to include the latest technologies and industry best practices. We actively engage with technology leaders and experts to bring essential real-world insights and opportunities directly to our students and small business partners.
Emerging technologies are central to our strategy for bridging educational gaps and enhancing employability. At Tomkin Outreach, we are dedicated to not only adapting to technological changes but also leading the effort to utilize these powerful tools to empower communities and develop leaders who are confident, competent, and compassionate.
